CNN —Taylor Swift released “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, a 31-track surprise double album, and she’s clearly in an emotionally evolved era. Either way, as the title suggests in this song, she’s determined to get him back. ‘I Hate it Here’“This place made me feel worthless,” Swift sings. Others have connected the Cassandra that Swift sings about to the figure in Greek mythology, a priestess whose accurate prophecies were not believed. ‘The Bolter’“As she was leaving it felt like breathing,” Swift sings.

Moving away from a major city, Moretti found, can be terrible for your career. The market for WFH jobs has cratered, putting everyone who moved away from big cities at risk. Those who moved away from big cities effectively gave up their career insurance. In a big city, you also run into people who work for other companies in your industry — on the bus, at the bar, in line at the deli. "The benefits of being a big city," Moretti tells me, "have been underappreciated" during the pandemic.

Jerusalem CNN —Israeli authorities are preparing to send a group of Palestinian patients who were being treated in East Jerusalem hospitals back to Gaza this week. They had all received permission from Israeli authorities to travel to Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem for advanced medical care – most before Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. Mick Krever/CNNAmong them will be Nima Abu Garrara, who was brought from Rafah to East Jerusalem pregnant with twins and gave birth on October 5. But staying in East Jerusalem is no longer an option. Before October, a third of those receiving care at the Augusta Victoria Hospital were patients from Gaza who needed advanced cancer treatment.

“I was embarrassed for our conference, for our party, because we can do better than we did last night,” said GOP Rep. Lance Gooden of Texas. It was a huge mistake,” said GOP Rep. CNN —King Charles is both one of the luckiest men on earth and one of the most tragic. I find the royal family to be an anachronism. Charles’ diagnosis, on a basic human level, should merit all of our sympathy — which, after all, is an unlimited resource. Fundstrat's Tom Lee thinks a March cut is even more likely after "surprise" Fed comments. Powell's cautious tone sent stocks into the red on Wednesday, after he announced a March rate cut was unlikely. "We perceive such remarks as the Fed trying to herd the 'hawks.'" "We see higher probabilities for March cut than consensus," Fundstrat's Tom Lee wrote in a note on Thursday. Bank of America said Powell's remarks were a "surprise" to investors who have been pining for an early Fed pivot.

MILAN, N.H. (AP) — Some of the Northeast’s best young ski jumpers took flight at the country’s oldest ski club on Sunday, continuing a comeback for the once-popular winter sport featuring speed, skill and sometimes spills. The Eastern Ski Jumping Meet took place at the Nansen Ski Club in the shadow of one of the nation's oldest jumps during Milan’s 102nd annual winter carnival in northern New Hampshire. They built the 172-foot (51-meter) “Big Nansen” jump in 1937 with government help and hosted Olympic trials a year later. In 2011 ski jumping returned to the collegiate level, welcoming women jumpers for the first time. Most of the people I see at (ski jump) clubs, especially the younger kids, are mostly girls,” she said.

HEBRON, West Bank, Nov 22 (Reuters) - For Yusif Abu Maria, the looming Gaza hostage deal is especially personal. Not only is his son on a list of candidates of imprisoned Palestinians to be freed by Israel: It would be a replay of Abu Maria's own release from jail almost 20 years ago. In return, 150 female inmates or teenaged males will be released from Israeli security prisons. Many Israelis see the Palestinian prisoners as dangerous foes whose freedom would raise risks of new and widespread violence. "I feel just like any mother who has a wounded son in jail would," said Yusif's wife, Fida.

For nearly 250 years, the letters, more than 100 of them, sat sealed in Britain’s National Archives, unopened and unexamined until a history professor stumbled upon them. He found, to his delight, a treasure trove bearing intimate details about romance and daily life in mid-18th-century France. Inside the box, Dr. Morieux found three bundles of letters. Only three of the letters had been opened, most likely by a low-level clerk shortly after the British Navy had received them from France. The clerk may have deemed them not worthy of further inspection and put them into storage, where they were forgotten about.

In response to Buck's comments, Greene said it seemed like the Freedom Caucus member was pining for a job from the Democratic president. Through the 1970s and much of the 1980s, Kira Muratova’s stirring films “Brief Encounters” and “The Long Farewell” went unseen, banned by the Soviet Union. “The Long Farewell” provoked such outrage from censors that Muratova, then a new voice in cinema, was stripped of her film degree and prohibited from filmmaking for years. The female characters pine, ache and, amplified by the dramas surrounding them, seem to scream: Life is hard! “Brief Encounters,” from 1967 and my favorite of the pair, is an audacious portrait of two women on the cultural fringes pining after the same man. But streaming TV is still a good deal. I wrote in May about why a wave of price hikes for ad-free streaming services was on the horizon. REUTERS/Jason Reed Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - It's summer camp season and not to be left out, U.S. rate setters and overseas pals gather in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to talk central banking. U.S. Federal Reserve officials (plus friends from the ECB, BoE and BOJ) descend on Jackson Hole, Wyoming on Aug. 24-26 for their annual central bank confab. Inflation remains sticky in places and investors want to know how long it will take for central banks to switch to easing. European PMIs could provide a bigger signal on whether the European Central Bank will hike again in September and if the Bank of England opts for a big rate increase. Turkey's central bank is poised to raise rates on Thursday for the third time in a row since Hafize Gaye Erkan was appointed as governor in early June.

8 Songs About August
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Dear listeners,Happy August. It’s the month of out-of-office auto replies, finally breaking heat waves, and — if the songs about August are to believed, anyway — waning summer romances. After an especially brutal July, we’re finally enjoying some pleasant summer weather here in New York. In addition to Van the Man, today’s selections include a weepy country standard, a detour into early psych-pop from a once and future Bee Gee and yet another Taylor Swift song about the cruelty of summer. Maybe not yet for good, but at least for now, and I’d say that’s reason enough to rejoice.

What Richard Hofstadter called the paranoid style in American politics is no longer a fringe phenomenon: Bizarre conspiracy theories are now mainstream on the American right. And one manifestation of this paranoia is the persistent dismissal of positive economic data as fake when a Democrat occupies the White House. With inflation falling rapidly over the past year, we’ve seen some resurgence of inflation trutherism. Now, there are some sociological differences between the old inflation truthers and the new recession truthers. The former group tended to be old-school reactionaries still pining for a return to the gold standard.

One Wall Street analyst recounted his recent efforts to buy a new truck that almost left him paying thousands above sticker price. Longtime Tesla bull Adam Jonas went car shopping recently and discovered firsthand what many Tesla fans have long adored about the automaker: Buying a Tesla is a lot easier than shopping at a traditional car dealership. The Morgan Stanley analyst said he got the typical dealership treatment when he went to an unnamed brand's sales lot. It's an experience nearly every car buyer has experienced, especially in an age where incentives and discounts are scant. It's a smooth process that is creating an increasingly visible discrepancy between the legacy car buying experience and the Tesla experience."
